— Abyss Dancer's final thoughts and prayer for Engen's glory. | ||
Abyss Dancer (심연의 무희), also known by her real name, Roxanne, was a notorious Villain and the former right-hand of Engen, the Smiling Man in the era of Nera over a century ago.
A powerful Gift user of deadly fame, Roxanne swore her loyalty to Engen during the War of Inheritance as they grew to be friends and comrades in arms. She sided with Engen and the remaining remnants of Nera as they fought against the Hero Clan during which she became known as The Shadow of the Smiling Man but abandoned him before their bitter defeat in the Great War.
Unlike her old friends who retired from public life, Abyss remained active in the Age of Heroes and Villains as she led her own group of Villains and was an ally to the Nameless as a "weapon" for Engen after betraying him. During the Invasion of Castle Gray, Abyss gave her life to create a "path" for Engen to walk on with her blood.
Abyss was introduced initially in the District 17 Assault Arc from a camo of the Great War between the Villains and Hero Clan and a short explanation of Gifts. She made her official appearance in The Torch Arc, where she answered Engen's call of Villains to help in taking The Torch from the Hero Clan.
Appearance[]
Abyss Dancer was a woman with dark black long hair and bangs in her humanoid or primary form. She had pupilless white eyes and wore a veil that covered her face along with a tattered black cape. Her fingers took the form of long sharp blood red colored talons. She spoke entirely in the Ancient Language that only a few people understood.
In her Sanjiva form, Roxanne was a giant, black-colored serpent which might take the appearance of a mythical reptile such as a lindworm or a wyrm with giant red claw-like blade tendrils. She had no teeth and just a large caving beak which she could presumably use for impaling, drilling or grabbing. Her complete form seems to be able to levitate and fly at alarming speeds, being capable of destroying the ground around her when she crashed into it. The base of her jawline has a pair of 5 appendages tipped with red blades.
Personality[]
Abyss showed great loyalty towards Engen having been known across the world as his right-hand and "shadow". After witnessing the Steel Witch's power she became fearful of the Witch but still continued to support Engen. Even after abandoning him during the war, she answered his call to attack the Hero Clan and willingly gave up her freedom in just becoming a "weapon" for him.
History[]
Roxanne's early life remains mostly a mystery, though it’s believed that she was born after the Chaotic Era. A powerful Gift user, Roxanne built a significant reputation for killing anyone with her own hands that beheld her true form and gained infamy for hating her transformed state.[1]
Nugal, Engen, Chain and Abyss during the Era of Nera.
During the War of Inheritance, Roxanne met Engen, one of the heirs vying for the Nera throne. She was drawn to Engen's boldness in pursuing his goals and his unyielding conviction, even in the face of overwhelming adversity. Impressed by Engen's determination, Roxanne swore her loyalty to the heir of Nera. Around this time, Roxanne also formed close bonds with others, including Nugal and Chain, another heir of Nera and Engen's partner as well becoming known as "Abyss Dancer.
Together, Roxanne, Nugal, Chain, and Engen became an inseparable team, fighting side by side in multiple battles during the war.[2] Eventually, the war concluded with Engen’s victory, and the King of Nera finally passing away as a result of the side effects of The Torch. Just three days after Engen ascended to the throne, a woman known as The Steel Witch appeared. In mere seconds, she slaughtered everyone in the area and destroyed the Torch. This event deeply demoralized her.[3]
Despite this harrowing encounter, Roxanne continued to support Nera, though it had lost much of its previous strength. The remnants of the kingdom still fought for a place of dominance in the world.
As time passed, rumors spread of a man known as the Skysword, who had gained worldwide attention after killing numerous district lords and defeating Yushin, one of the Elders, in a duel. The Skysword's rise to power culminated in the formation of the Hero Clan, a powerful organization built on his fame and influence. It wasn't long before the Hero Clan, under the banner of justice, came into conflict with Engen and the remaining forces of Nera, resulting in the War of the Reeds, also known as the Great War.[4]
Abyss fought alongside his allies in this conflict, but after losing two major battles, the remnants of Nera were defeated. In the aftermath, the name "Nera" was banned, and the clan officially erased it from history.
