— Nugal's final words and prayer for Engen's glory. |
Nugal (누갈) was a prominent Villain and a former member of the Nameless that was once a core member of Engen’s gathering of followers in the era of Nera over a century ago. He is the father of Bagna, the newest member of the Nameless who joined the group after his death and continues his father's legacy.
A famous Gift user of immense power, Nugal swore his loyalty to Engen during the War of Inheritance and they grew to be friends and comrades in arms. He later sided with Engen and the remaining remnants of Nera as they fought against the Hero Clan till their bitter defeat in the Great War.
Nugal retired from the public eye and started a family in a slum community after the Villains’ loss. However, he slowly lost control of his Gift as he had slowly transformed into a shell of his former self. Years later, Nugal would meet with Engen for one last time and commit suicide but not before wishing his old friend good luck for one final time.
Nugal was first introduced in The Torch Arc, where Engen wanted his help in his renewed wars and schemes against the Hero Clan but refused to aid the Smiling Man.
Appearance[]
Nugal, in his younger days, was a tall, brown-skinned man with black eyes and hair styled in a short crew cut along with big mutton chops and chain hair pointed towards his mouth. He was muscular with thick arms that sported equally large arm hair. For clothing, he wore a military-looking uniform with a green short-sleeved shirt, large brown pants, boots, and a pocketed vase.
However, years later in the modern era, Nugal looked completely different as he became skinnier and emaciated looking. He wore shorts and was shirtless, but the most glaring change was his head taking on the appearance of a formless flame.
While in his monstrous form, he was a large entity with multiple arms and skulls that oozed what looked like pro material.
Personality[]
Nugal, in his youth, was incredibly confident in his abilities and showed great loyalty towards Engen, having proclaimed himself the fire that would incinerate his enemies before his darkness could reach them as long as he lived in his youth.
But after witnessing the The Steel Witch's power, he was demoralized and lost hope as he saw her as a God.
History[]
Nugal's early life wasn’t fully explored in detail, but he was most likely born after the Chaotic Era. As an adult, he boasted an impressive reputation for himself as he was known as a powerful Gift user and even had an entire group of followers that admired him for it.
During the War of Inheritance, Nugal met Engen, one of the heirs that fought for supremacy for the Nera thrown and became enthralled by his boldness in achieving his objectives as well his conviction towards life even in the face of immense adversity. Nugal would swear his loyalty towards the would-be king having grown to admire him. In this period, he befriended another one like him by the name of Roxanne and Chain, another heir of Nera and Engen’s partner.
Nugal, Roxanne, Chain, and Engen became incredibly close as fought in multiple battles together during the war.
Years passed but the war eventually ended with Engen's victory and the previous king of Nera dying from The Torch’s side effects. The war eventually ended with Engen's victory and the previous king of Nera dying.
In the following three days after Engen assumed the throne and was ready to inherit the The Torch, a woman known as The Steel Witch appeared and killed everyone in the area in a mere second, she later destroyed the Torch.[1] Nugal could only stand in shock while struck with utter fear upon seeing her god-like power, realizing that his flames would never be able to burn her. He became demoralized after seeing her powers and became convinced that she was a complete "God" above even that of the powerful Elders. [2]
However, while shaken by the experience, Nugal continued to support Nera while it was no longer at its peak but was still strong enough to fight for a place of dominance in the world. After the time in which the Witch appeared, certain rumors started to spread around the same time about a man known as the Skysword who had gained the attention of the world as he killed numerous district lords and defeated one of the Elders, Yushin in a duel. The Skysword had gained enough power to form an organization called the Hero Clan based around his fame. It was only a matter of time until the clan, having operated underneath the banner of justice, clashed with Engen and the remaining remnants of Nera in what would be called the War of the Reeds or the Great War.
Nugal fought alongside his comrades in numerous battles, but eventually they were defeated once again after losing two major battles in the war. In the war’s aftermath, the word "Nera" ceased to exist with the clan banning its name after their victory.
Nugal's entire activities after the war aren't fully known but he retired from the public eye and was counted amongst the Nameless, the survivors of the war. In the Age of Heroes and Villains, he settled down in a slum and started a family as he had a son named Bagna whom he raised in the harsh and isolated environment but it's unknown if he had a spouse or not.
Nugal was still in contact with Engen as he came to know about his newest recruit a young girl named Rachel Sinclair, a child of Reagan Sinclair, the Mad Elder and member of the Elders.
Story[]
The Torch Arc[]
A century into his retirement, Nugal received a summon from his old friend, Engen as the Smiling Man needed help in attacking the Hero Clan’s transportation of The Torch’s fragment. However, Nugal refused the call and kept to himself.
Engen, along with Rachel, traveled to Nugal's slums to confront him about his refusal. Nugal explained his reasons for not wanting to help as he realized that fighting was pointless as long as the Witch was still around, he then mocked his old friend for still clinging to the glory days of the past but the old king of Nera rebuffed Nugal’s words of embitterment by stating that he spoke nonsense and that his time has only begun.
Nugal, upon hearing such a statement, reveals himself to Engen and Rachel in his Monster Form. He clashed against Rachel but lost the fight against her. Rachel, exhausted, was happy about her victory but felt that it was a half-assed victory with Engen agreeing that it was. Now in his human form, Nugal had held back in seriously fighting the young girl but was impressed in seeing her progress towards mastering her abilities and innate full potential.
Engen once again asks him for his assistance in the Smiling Man's plans, but Nugal refuses stating that he was nowhere near useful for the Smiling Man's plans.
Assault on Castle Gray Arc[]
Nugal is remembered by his old friends during their Invasion of Castle Gray. Abyss Dancer, in her final moments, remembers their youth and their days of fighting together against countless enemies.
