Rejoice, and worship the flame that incinerates the light! Praise the king of Nera, who's devoured the fire to ignite! I will wait for that to come in Hell, my King. When your Darkness stretches over the entire world!

— Nugal's final words and prayer for Engen's glory.

Nugal (누갈) was a notorious Villain and a former member of the Nameless. He was once a core member of Engen’s gathering of followers in the Era of Nera over a century ago and is the father of Bagna, a member of the Nameless who joined the group after his death and continues his father's legacy.

A famous Gift user of immense power, Nugal swore his loyalty to Engen during the War of Inheritance and they grew to be friends and comrades in arms. He later sided with Engen and the remaining remnants of Nera as they fought against the Hero Clan till their bitter defeat in the Great War.

Nugal retired from the public eye and started a family in a slum community after the Villains’ loss. However, he slowly lost control of his Gift as he had slowly transformed into a shell of his former self.

Nugal was introduced in The Torch Arc, where years later, he met with Engen for one last time who had wanted his help in his renewed wars and schemes against the Hero Clan but refused and decided to commit suicide before wishing his old friend good luck for one final time.

Appearance[]

Nugal, in his younger days, was a tall, brown-skinned man with black eyes and hair styled in a short crew cut along with big mutton chops and chin hair pointed towards his mouth. He was muscular with thick arms that sported equally large arm hair. For clothing, he wore a military-looking uniform with a green short-sleeved shirt, large brown pants, boots, and a pocketed vase.

However, centuries later, Nugal looked completely different as he became skinnier and emaciated looking. He wore shorts and was shirtless, but the most glaring change was his head taking on the appearance of a formless flame.

Personality[]

But after witnessing the The Steel Witch's power, he became demoralized and lost hope as he saw her as a God.

History[]

Nugal's early life wasn't fully known, though it’s believed that he was born after the Chaotic Era. As an adult, Nugal built a significant reputation for himself as a powerful Gift User having attracted a group of followers who admired him for his strength and abilities.

During the War of Inheritance, Nugal crossed paths with Engen, one of the heirs vying for the Nera throne. Nugal was drawn to Engen's boldness in pursuing his goals and his unyielding conviction, even in the face of overwhelming adversity. Impressed by Engen's determination, Nugal swore his loyalty to the heir of Nera. Around this time, Nugal also formed close bonds with others, including Roxanne, also known as the Abyss Dancer and Chain, another heir of Nera and Engen's partner.

Together, Nugal, Roxanne, Chain, and Engen became an inseparable team, fighting side by side in multiple battles during the war.[1]

The Steel Witch and the Great War[]

Eventually, the war concluded with Engen’s victory, and the King of Nera finally passing away as a result of the side effects of The Torch. Just three days after Engen ascended to the throne, a woman known as The Steel Witch appeared. In mere seconds, she slaughtered everyone in the area and destroyed the Torch. Nugal, struck with shock and fear, realized that his flames were no match for her power. He believed she was a "God" far superior to even the mighty Elders, which deeply demoralized him.

Despite this harrowing encounter, Nugal continued to support Nera, though it had lost much of its previous strength. The remnants of the kingdom still fought for a place of dominance in the world.

As time passed, rumors spread of a man known as the Skysword, who had gained worldwide attention after killing numerous district lords and defeating Yushin, one of the Elders, in a duel. The Skysword's rise to power culminated in the formation of the Hero Clan, a powerful organization built on his fame and influence. It wasn't long before the Hero Clan, under the banner of justice, came into conflict with Engen and the remaining forces of Nera, resulting in the War of the Reeds, also known as the Great War.[2]

Nugal fought alongside his allies in this conflict, but after losing two major battles, the remnants of Nera were defeated. In the aftermath, the name "Nera" was banned, and the clan officially erased it from history.

Age of Heroes and Villains[]

The details of Nugal's life following the war are unclear. He retreated from the public eye and became one of the Nameless, survivors of the war. In the Age of Heroes and Villains, Nugal settled in a slum, where he started a family and raised a son named Bagna. However, it is unknown whether he had a spouse.

Even in his secluded life, Nugal maintained contact with Engen and became aware of his latest recruit, a young girl named Rachel Sinclair a daughter of Reagan Sinclair, the Mad Elder and a member of the Elders.

Story[]

The Torch Arc[]

A century into his retirement, Nugal received a summon from his old friend, Engen as the Smiling Man needed help in attacking the Hero Clan’s transportation of The Torch’s fragment. However, Nugal refused the call and kept to himself.

Engen, along with Rachel, traveled to Nugal's slums to confront him about his refusal. Nugal explained his reasons for not wanting to help as he realized that fighting was pointless as long as the Witch was still around, he then mocked his old friend for still clinging to the glory days of the past but the old king of Nera rebuffed Nugal’s words of embitterment by stating that he spoke nonsense and that his time has only begun.

Nugal, upon hearing such a statement, reveals himself to Engen and Rachel in his Monster Form. He clashes against Rachel but loses the fight against her. Rachel, exhausted, is happy about her victory but feels that it was a half-assed victory with Engen agreeing that it was.

Now in his human form, Nugal had held back in seriously fighting the young girl but was impressed in seeing her progress towards mastering her abilities and innate full potential. Engen once again asks him for his assistance in his plans, but Nugal refuses stating that he was nowhere near useful for the Smiling Man's plans.[3]

Assault on Castle Gray Arc[]

During the Invasion of Castle Gray, Nugal is remembered by his old friends. Abyss Dancer, in her final moments, remembers their youth and their days of fighting together against countless enemies.
