The Prosecutor (검방전사), also known by his real name Saulcai (사울카이), is a top-tier hero and the leader of Warden Pact. He is the mentor of The Defender, a prominent hero and the ex-boyfriend of Rebecca Bernstein, also known as Highnoon. Following the Invasion of Castle Gray, he was imprisoned in New Nera after being used as a human weapon by the Puppeteer but escaped and started working with Chain, the infamous Villain. Through Chain, he has become an ally towards Hero Killer and her crew of allies.

Aside from his status as a famous hero, Prosecutor is one of the greatest warriors in his homeland, Avaarin, the warrior nation and the former student of Previous Knight Commander of Avaarin, their homeland's most powerful swordsman and a member of the Four Swordsmen, the greatest sword wielders in the world.

The Prosecutor was introduced in the Hero Candidate Arc as the second head examiner of the Hero Trials and a hero of Cloud Garden. Later, he was one of the central characters of The Torch Arc where it was revealed he was a member of the clan's Special Forces the most powerful elites gathered for their combatant prowess and the strongest hero in Cloud Garden for District 16. However, he was captured by the Nameless and given to the Puppeteer to be used as a bargaining chip.

Appearance[]

Prosecutor is a heavily muscular man with towering height and grayish brown colored hair with brown skin and eyes that glow red underneath his helmet. His facial features are completely unknown. His hero costume is based on the concept of the Spartans from Frank Miller's 300 or a knight (if so a weird one), even if he doesn't use a Greek helmet, but a European knight's one.

He wears metal greaves and sabatons that cover his entire legs up to his knees and wears a metal thong with nothing else. However, in his youth, he wore medieval-looking clothing but appeared to cease wearing clothes as he got older.

He wears the necklace of the Answerer and carries The Answerer, special Shards into battle as the sword and shield.

Personality[]

Prosecutor's personality seems to be one part troll, two parts dutiful knight. Seeing as he told a masked Hero Killer about Golden Arrow's Gift for no particular reason other than it was funny he also had a blood-red glow of anticipation as he looked forward to fighting her. He is a frequent teaser too having once made fun of Defender's strange laugh only to laugh the same.

Aside from that, Saulcai is an eccentric but polite man, which is a direct contrast to his origins in a fierce warrior nation.[1] He is a man with strong convictions that holds both chivalry and duty to the highest stranded believing that in order to be a hero one has to be unwavering towards justice, never breaking, never faltering, always protecting the weak and the civilians living up to his values and code.[2]

As the Second Head Tester during the Hero Trails, he wouldn't allow any weak-minded individuals or those only interested in power, money, or influence to become heroes. These views stemming from an intense sense of self-loathing and hatred he had for himself and the world when he was younger.

But the Prosecutor is a very warm and friendly man who often enjoys playing to the tone of Highnoon's antics while spending time with her and is extremely kind to his student The Defender who he often teases.

After his release from Puppeteer's control, the Prosecutor punished himself heavily for being used to kill innocent people and role in Azure Dragon's death. Suffering from depression, Saulcai became colder having threatened to harm Highnoon following their breakup, regressed to his more violent tendencies prior to his meeting with Chain, and has become notably more somber in contrast to his once bright personality.

But despite his struggles, Saulcai has remained dedicated to heroism having aided the HK crew in their endeavors against the clan and later took up the task of leading the next generation of proper heroes.

When using his Gift, Blade of Ire - Avaarian Wrath, Saulcai becomes a mindless berserker blinded by a bloodthirsty rage that has little regard for protecting himself while laughing maniacally.

History[]

Saulcai during his childhood.

Saulcai during his childhood.

Saulcai was born in the nation of Avaarin, a settlement famous for its powerful warriors and ruled by Milen Kula, an Elder during the Era of Nera. Like all Avaarinian citizens, he was raised to be a warrior but was found to be far more talented in combat than his peers early in his childhood.

At one point, he came under the tutelage of The Knight Commander of Avaarin, a member of the Four Swordsmen and one of the strongest warriors in their homeland. Saulcai was fostered into a powerful warrior by the Knight Commander who taught him about swordsmanship and combat throughout his childhood. After years of training, Saulcai was given his Avaarinian helmet by his mentor on the day of becoming an adult and took the oath to never take it off unless it was in front of his lover.

The Berserker[]

While celebrated for his prowess as an incredibly powerful warrior, Saulcai never aspired to become one. Unlike his countrymen and kin, he despised Avaarin’s brutal way of life and the cheers of his people as they celebrated his victories in the gladiatorial tournaments, where taking an opponent’s life was seen as a spectacle.

Despite his hatred for this existence, Saulcai continued to wield his blade, convincing himself that if he ever stopped, the people he cared for would perish. During this time, he became known as "Saulcai the Berserker."[3]

However, life in Avaarin was made bearable by his friendship with the Bernstein twins, two orphaned Gift users, forming a particularly close bond with Rebecca. Over time, their relationship deepened, and the two eventually became lovers. It is also assumed that Saulcai also befriended the future successor that would one day become their generation's Knight Commander.

The Answerer's Passing and Joining the Hero Clan[]

At some point, Saulcai was entrusted with The Answerer, the treasured weapons of his people, by his former mentor before leaving his homeland. He later joined the Hero Clan during the incoming Age of Heroes and Villains, adopting the codename "The Prosecutor." Rebecca following soon after.

Prosecutor quickly rose through the clan's ranks, gaining recognition even from the Elder Victoria, who was aware of his prowess. It remains unknown whether he participated in the waning days of the Great War, as Chaos did.

He became one of the central heroes operating in Cloud Garden, the hometown of the Elder Bishop, and a member of the Special Forces the strongest and most elite group of heroes recognized by the clan solely for their combat prowess. Throughout the years, the Prosecutor befriended many other heroes as he formed close friendships with Golden Arrow and Harvester.

The Murder of the Knight Commander[]

Centuries into the Age of Heroes and Villains, Saulcai’s former teacher, the Knight Commander, was ambushed and "murdered" by a hero known as Bone Blade. After the ambush, Bone Blade stole the Knight Commander's treasured sword and later rose to become the Second Finger of the Black Hand's The Fingers. Saulcai was unaware of the truth behind these events.

Mentoring New Heroes[]

In later years, Prosecutor took on a young hero known as The Defender as his student. The two developed a close bond while training her into a formidable warrior and hero, instilling in her his ideals and principles of heroism.[4]

Story[]

Hero Candidate Arc[]

Prosecutor is seen with Golden Arrow as the two heroes spot Hero Killer fleeing after breaking into the 16th Division. He commits on her guts in breaking, founding to be interesting while Arrow tells to shut up as he focuses on taking her down.[5]

The Torch Arc[]

Prosecutor and his team are placed in charge of transporting The Torch by the Hero Clan and Bishop.

Assault on Castle Gray Arc[]

Prosecutor is used as a human weapon by Puppeteer during The Smiling Man and the Villains's invasion of Castle Gray. Puppeteer advances ahead of her allies and uses Prosecutor's unconscious body to slaughter the Castle Lord and the fortress soldiers.

Puppeteer then welcomes Engen and the villains while making Prosecutor hold the head of the lord and greets the Smiling Man with a fierce attack.

Hero Killer, having known him from the Hero Trials and developed respect for him, felt iffy about fighting him while in this state and considered putting him out of his misery. Puppeteer used him as a hostage to blackmail Highnoon and murder Azure Dragon, Crimson Dragon's older brother.

War of Disbandment Arc[]

Prosecutor is freed from Puppeteer's control as he wakes up from his comatose state but ended up imprisoned in a large dungeon with Highnoon. Ashamed of being used as a "tool" for acts of villainy and the murder of a fellow hero Prosecutor repeatedly smashed his entire head into the ground for days till it was bloody with a distraught Highnoon shuddering at the act in the corner.[6]

After having enough of his punishment, Saulcai breaks up with Rebecca stating that he doesn't love her anymore and to leave before he kills her. Rebecca, prepared for the outcome, cries, nonetheless. The Prosecutor then prepares to leave their prison with The Answerer in his hands.[7] Following his escape, the Prosecutor is seen coming to the aid of a civilian being attacked by a mugger but violently punishes them which scares the civilian before engaging gangs of criminals. He is then approached by Chain and Nenya.[8]
