The War of the Reed, also known as the Great War, was a major conflict fought between the Villains of Nera and the Hero Clan from the late Era of Nera to the early start of the Age of Heroes and Villains. Various parts of the wars are mentioned by various characters in the series and are depicted through flashbacks.

The war is remembered as being one that redefined the terms - "Heroes" and "Villains" and ushered in the Age of Heroes and Villains.

History[]

The Beginning Catalyst[]

After the time in which the mysterious woman known as The Steel Witch defeated Engen, the second king of Nera and destroyed the kingdom, certain rumors started to spread around the same time. A man known as the Skysword had visited a district lord to ask for help in fighting against the remaining remnants of the kingdom in order to stop their ambitions, but the Lord refused.

The Skysword then subsequently requested a duel in a field of reeds and killed the lord with a single strike of his sword. The incident wouldn't bring much attention or interest to others as the changing of district leadership wasn't common. However, the Skysword continued defeating more and more lords while gaining more and more attention. The swordsman would eventually grab the world's attention after he defeated one of the Elders, Yushin in a duel.

Using his newly acquired fame, the Skysword established an organization called the Hero Clan and in a matter of time underneath the banner of justice, the clan declared war on the remaining remnants of Nera. The heroes of the clan would clash with Engen and his forces.

Frontlines[]

Thousands of battles took place in numerous areas and districts with fierce fighting from both the villains and heroes.

Engen, the king of the Nera villains, fought on the frontlines in numerous battles as he slaughtered dozens of heroes and opponents from the Hero Clan. [1]

Chaos Encounters the Smiling Man

In one such battle, a fighter for the clan named Jeremy Bernstein witnessed his actions as the hero hid while observing him fighting. [2] It was around this time that the Nera King started to be referred to as the Smiling Man with his iconic scar mimicking an ever-present smile or smirk on his face. In another battle, Fullmoon, a member of the clan lost her eye to a villain in a fight.

The war itself wasn't entirely exclusive to Nera, Villains who weren't associated with Nera also fought along with other factions that took advantage of the fighting. One such group was known as the Coalition who gained a reputation for kidnapping young Gift users to use as child soldiers. One such Gift user was a young girl named Kirine that was forced into fighting for them, however, she was nearly killed in a battle after her entire unit was destroyed.

It's unknown if any of the Elders officially fought in the conflict but Yushin was noted to be sympathetic towards the villains of Nera and its implied that Victoria may have fought or encountered Engen but isn't fully known if the former pirate captain participated in any actual battles.

The war continued on for years amongst thousands of battles, but the clan eventually claimed victory in two but vital battles that shifted the tide. One of which was fought in District 17's Dust City, where the most intense fighting took place in the final days of the war.

Aftermath[]

The war itself would redefine the terms - "Heroes" and "Villains". The clan in securing their victory, the Skysword ordered the destruction of everything related to Nera and banned the very use of the word - "Nera" as they erased it from history.

The Hero Clan went on to become the largest and greatest organization of Gift users in the world. The clan would solidify their control over countless districts and various parts of the known world. Members of the Elders also started taking an interest in the clan with some like Victoria and Bishop joining the ranks.

As for the surviving villain forces, they were either killed or hunted down by the clan. But the leaders of the war like Engen, disappeared from the public eye and went into hiding with many, assuming he had died in the war. And for those that once followed him, they also went into hiding like Abyss Dancer or retired from their lives as villains like with Chain and Nugal.
